Front Cover Picture

Our front cover picture draws attention to a report from the recent British Pharmaceutical Conference of a presentation on the evolution of molecular medicine (p766).

Remuneration settled

The Pharmaceutical Services Negotiating Committee has accepted a 3 per cent increase in the global sum. Professional fees and allowances are to remain unchanged (p745).

Phenylpropanolamine

The Committee on Safety of Medicines says that the evidence for a link between the use, in Britain, of phenylpropanolamine and stroke is weak (p748). Leading article (p741).

Carbamazepine

An original paper this week reports a study of how carbamazepine intoxication can arise from errors in the prescribing, dispensing and administration of the drug (p756). Packaging design was found to be a factor.

Glucosamine

A meta-analysis published this week suggests that there is no evidence that glucosamine provides a long-term cure for osteoarthritis and no evidence that it is safe to take over extended periods (p759).

Antiretroviral therapy

Issues in antiretroviral therapy were discussed at a congress on drug therapy in HIV infection recently. Report (p767).
