Front Cover Picture

Our front cover photograph depicts the precautions being taken at a farm in Kent against the current outbreak of foot and mouth disease. A special news feature this week describes the disease and examines how rural pharmacists are being affected by it (p305).

New uses for aspirin
Our continuing education article this week summarises the history of aspirin— “the first miracle drug” — and outlines its possible new uses (p315).

Smoking cessation
As No Smoking Day approaches, we investigate what pharmacists are doing to promote the day and look at the services they can offer to potential quitters (p319).

Code of Ethics
This week we publish the Royal Pharmaceutical Society's revised Code of Ethics as an eight-page, pull-out section (pp325–332). The Society is inviting comments. It is intended that the code, subject to review in the light of comments received, will be put to the Society's annual general meeting for adoption on May 16.

Health care priorities
A recent meeting, organised by the department of medicines management at Keele university, examined the challenges of priority setting and measurement in health care. Report (p334).
