Your four-legged friends 304
Text
It is thought that as many as 500,000 visits to UK pharmacies are made daily by people who own a pet, or a companion animal, as they are now properly known. But how many pharmacists have ever sold a veterinary product to a pet owner or given health advice about their customers' four-legged (and other) companions? Although many pharmacists may answer ad hoc enquiries about pet health, relatively few pharmacies have areas or sections in their premises dedicated to pets

Why paying fees this year was not perfect 304
Text
To judge by the number of letters received by The Journal, the difficulties encountered by members this year is unprecedented. We have published a selection of letters in previous weeks, but decided not to publish others since they all told the same story. The problems have been recognised by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society and in this week's issue there is an explanation of why the new system has fallen short and also an apology for any distress that has been caused

Is there life not as we know it on Mars? It seems odd that any project intending to determine whether life exists on an inhospitable planet such as Mars should concentrate on the search for water, liquid or solid, superficial or buried deep. Presumably, the reasoning is that without water there can be no life. Yet it is possible that there might be extraordinary forms of life other than “life as we know it” Text

Lions were special to the ancient Egyptians A commentary by French archaeologists, in the 15 January issue of Nature, throws some light on the status of the lion in ancient Egypt. Classical literary sources and inscriptions by various pharaohs have shown that lions were among the sacred animals bred and buried in the Nile valley, yet until recently no mummified lions have been discovered Text
