Pfizer — now using UniChem exclusively to distribute its products — said that one of the main reasons for introducing the arrangement was to protect its supplies from counterfeit medicines. Douglas Simpson, former editor of The Pharmaceutical Journal and member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s Council, is an angry man. Speaking at the West Metropolitan branch meeting last week, he questions what right government advisers have to dictate how the Society will develop once its regulatory powers have been removed. He suggests that if the profession is not careful it will end up with a “body akin to a poodle”

Abuse of prescription drugs is increasing 650
According to statistical reports from the US the abuse of prescription drugs there is on the increase, as visits to emergency departments reveal. A note in The Lancet for 5 May claims that hospital visits related to non-medical use of pharmaceuticals, including prescription drugs and over-the-counter products, increased 21 per cent between 2004 and 2005
