Importance of innovation 2
Mid-summer for The Journal is marked by the Pharmaceutical Care Awards, and the finalists for 2006 were recognised at a conference and dinner at the end of last week. This year, we departed from the norm and did not select winners and runners-up. Instead we decided that all seven finalists justified receiving the same prize and the right to call themselves a winner of a Pharmaceutical Care Award

Harold Wilson said a week is a long time in politics — something that Lord Hunt must be pondering now that he is no longer the Government minister with responsibility for pharmacy. Alan Johnson, the new Secretary of State for Health, and his crew are now at the helm of the good ship Department of Health and it will be interesting to see who is given responsibility for pharmacy and in which direction the profession will be steered

The Pharmaceutical Care Awards 2006 were presented at a celebratory dinner on 29 June at Apothecaries’ Hall, London. The dinner followed a conference at the Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s headquarters, where the finalists presented their projects to an audience of invited guests. The awards, organised by The Pharmaceutical Journal, are sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline and the Company Chemists’ Association

Bog MyrtleFragrant bog plant with many folk uses 28
I recently came across an attractive plant flourishing in a boggy patch of heathland almost on my doorstep. It was the bog myrtle or sweet gale (Myrica gale), a wetland shrub that bears orange-brown catkins in spring and early summer. It has a delicious fragrance, especially when in flower.
