Topiramate as an appetite suppressant?

Topiramate, marketed as an anti-epileptic drug, is now being evaluated for other indications. Dr Robert Donnelly (medical director, Janssen-Cilag) told The Journal on September 21 that potential indications included obesity, neuropathic pain and management of bipolar mania. Dr Donnelly said, of its use in obesity, that clinical trials to investigate its effectiveness, and its mechanism of action, possibly as an appetite suppressant, were under way. It would be some time before results were available.
