Astra Zeneca has launched a tablet formulation of Losec (omeprazole) — Losec MUPS. MUPS stands for multiple unit pellet system and this technology has allowed the acid-protected omeprazole units contained in the capsule to be made into a tablet formulation, says the company. The new tablets work in the same way as Losec capsules, have the same licensed indications and equivalent efficacy and healing rates. The tablets are smaller than the capsules and have been designed to be easier to swallow. Patients who cannot swallow tablets whole may disperse the tablets in water or fruit juice or mix them with yogurt. Unlike the capsules, the tablets are packaged in “push through” blister packaging to make it easier for patients to remove the tablets, says Astra Zeneca. The pack sizes and prices are the same as for Losec capsules (net price, 10mg 7 £4.99 28 £19.95; 20mg 7 £7.53 28 £30.13; 40mg 7 £15.06). Astra Zeneca says that Losec MUPS tablets will replace Losec capsules, which will no longer be available in the UK.
