Animals have rights

Animals have rights cartoon The sheep of England are hooted and chased about, that they are never at peace; and all beasts are beaten and baited without any cause; aye, and under their master's eye too! Blackguards and boys should be deprived of all hostile and barbarous weapons, such as guns, whips, goads, spurs, etc, etc. And people who are to have the care and guidance of animals should be chosen for their sobriety and mild disposition. - John Byng, Viscount Torrington: "Tour to the North', 1792.

John Castle The pen-and-ink drawing above is the final "Onlooker" illustration from the pen of John Castle, pharmacist and artist, who died suddenly last week. He had provided a weekly illustration for the "Onlooker" page since 1994.
