Wright In a tribute to the late Michael Ernest Milner Wright (PJ, October 9, p568), Mr Andrew Hersom (secretary of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society's Hull branch) writes: Mike Wright, who unfortunately died recently of cancer after a short illness, was apprenticed to W. Bennett of Chanterland Avenue, Hull, in 1947. He qualified from Sunderland technical college and registered in 1952, entering the family business of E. W. Wright & Son of Anlaby Common, Hull. In 1962, he acquired a second business (subsequently run by his wife Mary) in Chanterland Avenue, Hull. In 1978, these businesses were merged with the firm of E. A. Brocklehurst Ltd, of which he became a director. He retired from business and full-time practice in 1992.
Mike was on the committee of Hull Pharmacists Association and the Hull branch of the Society from 1954 until 1992. In 1976 he was branch chairman and for 14 years from 1978 until 1992 he was branch secretary. He lectured for the science foundation course and technicians' course at Hull technical college from 1959 until 1981. From 1992 he was the Society's representative to the court of Hull university.
He had numerous interests both inside and outside work, including writing computerised patient medication records and labelling systems before these became commercially available and being involved in researching the history of pharmacy in Hull.
I got to know Mike as an ordinary member of the branch, then as a committee member. He was always an incredibly efficient organiser, and very knowledgeable about branch matters, ably supporting numerous branch chairmen during their "year" and making sure that professional, educational and social events happened as they should have done. He was a great support to me when I took on the role of branch secretary. He was always available for advice but never criticised any of the difficult decisions the committee had to make on occasions.
