Mr D. J. MORL writes: It was with great sorrow that I learned of the untimely death of my friend and erstwhile colleague Michael R. Wheeler. Mike was born in Northampton and educated there at the grammar school before studying his degree in pharmacy in Manchester university. It was during his time there that he met Gill, who was later to become his wife.
After a spell in community pharmacy with Boots he joined Macarthys in the early 1970s, which was when we first met. He served the company well in a progression of management roles at Manchester and Wakefield depots, but he is probably best remembered for the time he gave to running the Romford depot, the "flagship of the fleet", as he would often remind us. I especially recall in later days his aptitude for the administration of hospital sales and contracts on behalf of the wholesale company, a post for which his experience was particularly suited.
He left the company after a spell of ill health and took a positive career shift when he opened his own pharmacy in the Essex village of Doddinghurst. Here he applied his talents of communication and people skills to the practice of pharmacy, establishing a professional reputation and grand rapport with the local resident population. He will be sorely missed in this community and it was at their suggestion that a service of memorial was held at the village church of All Saints on November 17.
For recreation he loved nothing better than "messing about in boats" or the times he was able to spend in rural France.

Shake out the reef and set the fores'l flying,
Sailing out across God's timeless sea.
No more of pain anxiety or sighing,
But anchor safe in calm, tranquillity.

Our thoughts go out to Gill, who also lost her mother just a few days before Mike's passing, and to their son Nick at this time of double tragedy.
