Nil by mouth

Progress in practice - The UKCPA autumn symposium was held in Blackpool on November 19-21, 1999

There was little consistency in drug administration in "nil by mouth" patients, said Ms AMY BILLINGTON (Ipswich hospital and Pharmacia & Upjohn poster winner for East Anglia) following a study of nil by mouth procedures. She suggested that local and national guidelines should be established, stating which drugs could be given (capsules and tablets were often acceptable) and those which could not (eg, opaque liquids in endoscopy).
