Workforce

Long hours are counterproductive

From Mrs C. Bray, MRPharmS

SIR,—I would like to commend Jill Jesson and Keith Wilson on their refreshing article (PJ, November 6, p747) concerning the "manpower" crisis in pharmacy, especially the last section "Balance in life", where they state that lifestyle, not just money, is the main motivation for employee pharmacists.
Pharmacists try to promote healthy lifestyles, but that lifestyle must be within their reach too!
The very fact that Birdsgrove House is currently providing treatment services and planning "stress" weekends (which I totally support) is surely indicative of the long hours spent working, upsetting this balance and this will be counter-productive in addressing the future workforce problems within our profession.
I would request that the Society becomes actively involved in this important issue - prevention is better than cure.
