Allergy

Are there links with baked beans and asthma?

From Mr W. Gaine, MRPharmS

SIR,—We all know about allergies associated with peanuts but has anybody noticed any links between baked beans and asthma or eczema or both. I have not carried out any organised research but when I have spoken to families with more than one child where asthma is present, there appears to be a relationship between the condition and the consumption of baked beans in early childhood.
Could this be a case where an illness is controlled by diet. I have not seen any research papers on this subject, if, indeed, there are any.
