Mrs HAZEL GUELDNER writes: Ellen Bain came to the pharmacy at Newton St Boswells in 1956 with her husband Bill, whom she had married in 1950. Together they ran this and latterly the pharmacy at St Boswells for almost 40 years. She also worked in the pharmacy at the Peel hospital for a time. Owing to ill health, she retired from the register in 1997. She was widowed only for a short time due to Bill's death in July this year. They leave their son Iain to whom our sympathies are extended.

Kaye On November 14, Leslie Kaye,FRPharmS, of 40 Princes Street, Roath, Cardiff. Mr Kaye registered in 1944.
Mrs MARION RAWLINGS writes: Leslie Kay trained at the Welsh school of pharmacy in Cardiff (as it is now). It was at the school that I first met Leslie, and so our acquaintanceship stretches back over 55 years. When I acquired my pharmacy in 1957, Leslie was already well established, and was becoming active in local pharmaceutical affairs. I was "coralled" and driven (literally) to my first National Pharmaceutical Union meeting, and my involvement in pharmaceutical political life began there.
In the 1960s, Leslie served as the chairman of the NPU branch in Cardiff (I was his secretary) and was a member of the Cardiff executive council. In the 1970s and early 1980s, he was chairman of the South Glamorgan local pharmaceutical committee (I was the secretary) and a member of the South Glamorgan family pracititoner committee. The reorganisation of the National Health Service in 1974 meant a great deal of work and endless meetings to ensure that pharmacy's voice was heard; Leslie was indefatigable and effective. Throughout his chairmanship over the years of the numerous committees and working parties with which he was involved, he never missed a meeting. His steadying, commonsense approach and devotion to the wellbeing of our profession was recognised by the award of the fellowship of the Society, and he was inordinately proud of that.
Professionally, Les Kaye was the complete community pharmacist. Nothing was too much trouble (he was the most equable of men). Kind advice and practical assistance were always available to patients, friends and colleagues. He was proud of his profession and keen to see it advance, always on the lookout for new recruits to the cause of maximising pharmacy's contribution to health care. I can certainly say that Leslie was "one of the bricks of the wall that I am", to use a local phrase, and many other pharmacists could say the same.
On a personal note, my husband and I have lost a good friend, and we shall miss him enormously. To our family he was always "Uncle Les", to be applied to in times of trouble in the sure knowledge that even if he did not know the answer he would lend support and encouragement. Our sympathy goes out to Ruth, his beloved wife, and his family (which includes several pharmacists, daughter, son-in-law, grand-daughter, etc). Their consolation must lie in the fact that Leslie will be remembered with affection and respect by those who came into contact with him.
