Nine pharmacists designated as fellows

Nine pharmacists have been designated as fellows of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society by the Society's panel of fellows. They are Mrs Mary Allen, Dr Gillian Eccleston, Mr Veni Harania, Mr Peter Marshall, Mr Graeme Millar, Mr Bill Scott, Mr Ken Seal, Professor Trevor Smart and Dr Keith Wilson.
The following brief biographical information has been provided by the panel of fellows to assist in identifying the pharmacists concerned. It does not necessarily represent the reasons for their designation as fellows.

Mrs Mary Allen, who registered in 1972, works in hospital and community pharmacy. From 1988 to 1995 she was joint head of information for the National Pharmaceutical Association. She was community pharmacy liaison officer for the UK Psychiatric Pharmacists Group from 1995 to 1998. She was founder, and is currently chairman, of the Hospice and Palliative Care Pharmacists. She chairs the Health Education Authority pharmacy advisory group. She has been chairman, secretary, newsletter secretary, public relations officer and careers officer of the Society's West Hertfordshire branch.

Dr Gillian Eccleston, who registered in 1967, is reader in pharmacy at the University of Strathclyde. Since 1993 she has been a member of the chemistry, pharmacy and standards subcommittee of the Committee on Safety of Medicines and since 1998 has been a member of the British Pharmacopoeia Commission pharmacy committee. She has been a lecturer at the University of Cincinnati (1990), the University of Saõ Paulo, Brazil (1995), and the University of Santiago, Chile (1997).

Mr Veni Harania is a community pharmacist who registered in 1968. He is managing director of Nucare Plc, of which he was a founder member in 1993. Between 1978 and 1992 he developed eight new pharmacies. From 1975 to 1977 he managed two branches of London Co-operative Chemists, then went on to assist the managing director of a group of 14 pharmacies, Jenkins Chemists in London and Kent. From 1987 to 1992 he initiated and led the Oshwal Pharmacists Group, of which he was secretary from 1989 to 1991. He was a committee member of the Society's Harrow and Hillingdon branch from 1997 to 1999.

Mr Peter Marshall, who registered in 1979, is a community pharmacist. He has been a director and deputy chairman of Numark Ltd since 1995 and was a director of Numark Management Ltd from 1994 to 1995. He is a former secretary of the Society's Bradford branch (1985-94) and a former vice-chairman (1989-92) and chairman (1992-94) of the Society's Yorkshire region. He was the Bradford school of pharmacy's British Pharmaceutical Students Association representative from 1976 to 1979.

Mr Graeme Millar is a community pharmacist who registered in 1978. He has been chairman of the Common Services Agency, NHS Scotland, since 1998 and was chairman of Edinburgh Sick Children's NHS Trust, 1993-99. He was executive chairman of the Scottish Pharmaceutical General Council from 1988 to 1994. He was managing director of Graeme Millar Chemists Ltd from 1979 to 1994. He has been chairman of the Society's Scottish Executive since 1998. He was secretary of Lothian NHS Endowment Investment Advisory Committee from 1994 to 1999.

Mr Bill Scott, who registered in 1975, has been chief pharmaceutical officer at the Scottish Office since 1993. He was formerly deputy chief pharmacist/senior principal at the Scottish Office, Home and Health Department (1990-93), chief administrative pharmaceutical officer, Tayside health board (1987-90) and principal pharmacist, Western General hospital, Edinburgh (1979-87). He is chairman of a Lothian health board working party on the application of pharmacokinetics to pharmacy practice. He is chairman of the Guild of Healthcare Pharmacists local branch and of Lothian area pharmaceutical committee.

Mr Ken Seal, who registered in 1946, is a community pharmacist. He is a former a director of Greenseal Ltd (1983-97), a partner in Exell Bros, Sheffield (1970-82), and a director of Group Pharmacies Ltd, Sheffield (1967-69). He chaired Sheffield local pharmaceutical committee from 1988 to 1998 and has more than 20 years' service on that committee and its predecessor chemists contractors committee. He is chairman of Trent regional pharmaceutical committee.

Professor Trevor Smart, who registered in 1978, has been Wellcome professor of pharmacology and head of the department of pharmacology at the School of Pharmacy, University of London, since 1995. He was previously reader in molecular neuropharmacology from 1994 to 1995 and senior lecturer in pharmacology and Wellcome Trust research fellow from 1991 to 1993. He is deputy chairman of the examiners board for the school's BSc degree in pharmacology and toxicology. He is editor of the Journal of Physiology and associate editor of Neuropharmacology.

Dr Keith Wilson, who registered in 1975, is an academic pharmacist at Aston university. Since 1988 he has been director of the undergraduate programme in the school of life and health sciences and director of undergraduate studies in pharmacy. He has been co-ordinator for the Society's registration examination at the Birmingham examination centre since 1993. He has been a committee member and treasurer of the Society's Birmingham branch since 1997.
