Aitken On November 8, Netta Elizabeth Bruce Aitken, of “Kirklands”, Station Road, Dunbar EH42 1JX. Mrs Aitken registered in 1927 and retired from the register in 1985.
Baxendale On August 4, John Lewis Baxendale, MRPharmS, of 22 Dixon Street, Clarence Park, South Australia 5034, Australia. Mr Baxendale registered in 1965.
Hobbs On October 24, Russell John Hobbs, of 13 Medway Drive, Keynsham, Bristol. Mr Hobbs registered in 1949 and retired from the register in 1982.
Dr PETER H. REDFERN writes: Jack Hobbs joined the staff of the school of pharmacy in the Bristol college of technology, the forerunner of the present department of the University of Bath, as a lecturer in pharmaceutics in 1951 and was a member of staff for almost 30 years, retiring in 1981.
His specialist area was microbiology, and generations of student benefited from the breadth and depth of his knowledge and also (though many did not appreciate it at the time) from the rigour of the training in aseptic techniques they received under his watchful eye. He could be a stern taskmaster but it did not take long for the students to discern that under the gruff exterior was a sensitive and caring man with an infectious and mischievous sense of humour. He will be much missed by all who knew him.
