Mr Ashwin Tanna's bid to become mayor of London (PJ, November 13, p772) was featured on independent television's London early evening news programme on December 5. In an interview, Mr Tanna said that he was not a politician, but voters should elect him so that they could see what a businessman could do. Customers of the pharmacy he manages in Lordship Lane, Dulwich, were interviewed. One described Mr Tanna as "people friendly" and another said that he would make a "fine mayor". Mr Tanna needs signatures from 10 electors in each of the 33 London boroughs if he is to stand. He has covered 15 boroughs so far. He also has to put up a £10,000 deposit, which he loses if his votes are less that 5 per cent of the votes gained by the winner. |

Pharmacy has another connection with the mayoral race. Mr Darren Johnson (the Green Party's candidate) is currently working in the Royal Pharmaceutical Society's resources directorate. He will be leaving at Christmas to concentrate on the campaign.
