The 2,000 awards in the Queen's new year honours list for 2000 include an OBE for a pharmacist, Dr Richard Gilbert, FRPharmS, for services to food safety. Dr Gilbert recently retired as director of the Public Health Laboratory Services's food hygiene laboratory, for which he had worked for many years. He was recently appointed visiting professor at the Royal Veterinary College, University of London.
Mr Peter Jenkins, FRPharmS, has been made MBE for services to pharmacy and the community in Abercynon, Mid Glamorgan, where he has been a proprietor pharmacist for nearly 30 years. Mr Jenkins is well known nationally for his long service on the Royal Pharmaceutical Society's Welsh Executive and the National Pharmaceutical Association's board, both of which he has chaired.
Another MBE has gone to a Northern Ireland community pharmacist, Ms Sheelagh Elizabeth Hillan, for services to the pharmaceutical profession. She is vice-president of the Pharmaceutical Society of Northern Ireland.
Awards in the pharmaceutical industry include a CBE for Dr Peter Read for services to the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry, of which he was president from 1996 to 1998. An MBE goes to Ms Gopa Mitra, head of public affairs at the Proprietary Association of Great Britain, for services to the industry.
A CBE has been awarded to Mr David Stathers, head of policy development for Boots the Chemists, and an OBE to Dr Barrington Furr, chief scientist at Astra Zeneca Pharmaceuticals, for services to cancer research. An OBE also goes to Ms Ann Rossiter, proprietor of H. Bronnley & Co Ltd, for services to the toiletries industry.
In other health-related fields, a CBE goes to Professor Richard Smith, editor of the British Medical Journal, for services to medical journalism, and an OBE goes to Professor Andrew Renwick, a member of the Medicines Commission, for services to medicines licensing and pharmacology.
