Downing In a tribute to the late Evan James Downing (PJ, January 8, p50), Mr DAVID REISSNER writes: I was sorry to learn of Jim Downing's passing. He made a sterling contribution to the Chemists' Defence Association, now celebrating its centenary. His motto was always: "Stand by the pharmacist."
May I share the memory of a letter Jim sent to me many years after one of my partners took Jim, Tim Astill and me to lunch - accompanied by some fine wine. "Tim and I would like to thank you for lunch yesterday," he wrote. "We can't remember a thing about it, but we're sure we must have enjoyed it!"

Mr JAMES A. STEVENTON writes: It was with the greatest sadness that I was informed of the death of my former partner Fred Mansell.
Fred qualified in Edinburgh after studying at Birmingham, working first for Hodges Chemist in Chapel Ash, Wolverhampton, before moving to Timothy Whites Chemist in Queen Street, Wolverhampton, which he managed until December, 1960. In January, 1961, he joined the partnership of F. G. Hopkins Bros, managing the premises in Jeffcock Road, Wolverhampton, with his usual quiet, professional dedication for a further 17 years. During that time, as senior partner, he was to see F. G. Hopkins grow by a further five units.
Shortly after his retirement, Fred and his wife Mary moved to Aberystwyth, where he was able to spend more time at his favourite hobby of painting, becoming sufficiently proficient to show his works locally and still assist with the local operatic society, as he and Mary had done with the South Staffs operatic society here in Wolverhampton.
Fred was a thoroughly good man who touched many lives during his 83 years and he will be sadly missed by his many friends and colleagues, whose thoughts go out to his wife Mary, his son David and daughter-in-law Elisabeth.
