The choice is yours

Pharmacy is a good career choice with plenty of opportunities for all. This may seem a strange statement among the normal outpourings of doom about the future, but our annual feature on pharmacy careers (which starts on p144) once again reveals the wide range of careers which pharmacists can and do chose from within the profession.
The traditional division into community, hospital and industry is far less obvious today and several different areas, such as working with the new primary care organisations, have opened up. Even within community pharmacy there are many options to choose from, including independent ownership, employment with a multiple or the variety of long-term locum work, an increasingly popular option as we reported last week.
As ever, we highlight a number of more unusual career paths taken by pharmacists, this year looking at work in the Civil Service, the armed forces and journalism. These positions indicate the usefulness of pharmacy as a broadly based science degree. Pharmacists are expected to turn their hands to many things and frequently do. Problem solving, complex calculations and reducing difficult subjects into easily communicated parts are skills which can be transferred widely.
As a quick look at the classified pages reveals there are many positions, at many locations, for pharmacists. Someone out there wants you, so - the choice is yours.
