POM Order amended

Sixteen substances have been added to the Prescription Only Medicines (Human Use) Order 1997.
They are: adapalene; altretamine; apraclonidine hydrochloride; bicalutamide; calcipotriol hydrate; citalopram hydrobromide; dorzolamide hydrochloride; exemestane; ferumoxsil; moexipril hydrochloride; quinagolide hydrochloride; sparfloxacin; tizanidine hydrochloride; valaciclovir hydrochloride; venlafaxine hydrochloride; and zalcitabine. Products containing these substances were previously classed as prescription medicines by provisions in their product licences.
Other amendments contained in the Prescription Only Medicines (Human Use) Amendment (No 2) Order 1999, which came into force on January 19, are an increase in the permitted pack size of felbinac gel for sale as a pharmacy medicine from 30g to 50g and the classification of levocarnitine as a prescription medicine, except where used for dietary supplementation.
