Dr Steven Kayne, FRPharmS, a community pharmacist from Glasgow, recently visited Targu Mures in central Romania, which is twinned with Eastwood in Glasgow. Together with a medical practitioner, an optometrist and three social workers, Dr Kayne visited the city to assess the health requirements of a group of Holocaust survivors and to consider the feasibility of establishing a day care centre for them.

The cost and availability of medicines and optical and dental treatment were identified as being among the most pressing requirements. Discussions were held with local pharmacies and opticians to try and resolve some of these problems. Some common medicines (particularly anxiolytics and ophthalmic products) appeared to be in short supply.
A small parcel of antibiotics and cardiovascular drugs was presented to Dr Paul Horvat the survivors' physician. In addition, almost £700 was given to Mr Bernard Sauber, president of the community. This represented donations received towards the project by two Jewish charities in Glasgow. Glucose testing equipment has subsequently been sent to Dr Horvat.
