Dr Joseph Chamberlain (editor of the Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology) has retired from the Society, after 10 years in the post. Speaking at a reception to mark his retirement recently, Professor Tony Moffat (the Society's chief scientist) said that, during Dr Chamberlain's editorship of the JPP, the publication had expanded from 80 to 124 pages, been put on a sound financial footing and hasd moved into the electronic age of editing, production and selling. Dr Chamberlain had started Pharmacy and Pharmacology Communications, the JPP sister publication. He had also looked after the science submissions to the British Pharmaceutical Conference and seen them grow in number from 130 to 300 a year. Dr Chamberlain was always ready to help his colleagues and always finished a job, no matter how hard it became. He would be a tough act to follow and it was significant that he would be replaced as editor by two people, Professors Duncan Craig and David Jones of the school of pharmacy at Queen's University, Belfast (see p177).
Dr Chamberlain said that he had thoroughly enjoyed his involvement with the flagship research journal of the Society. The editorship had allowed him to enjoy stimulating corespondence and debate with the world's leading figures in the pharmaceutical sciences, while the help and friendship of members of staff from all the departments at Lambeth had been particularly appreciated.
The reception was attended by former Science Chairmen of the British Pharmaceutical Conference, reflecting the fact that it was part of Dr Chamberlain's function to manage the science content of the conference. The photograph shows Professor Moffat (right) making a presentation to Dr Chamberlain.
