Clark On December 4, 1999, Helen Liddell Clark, MRPharmS, of "Gortonlee", 16 Princes Street, Innerleithen, Peeblesshire EH44 6JT, aged 101 years. Mrs Clark registered in 1920.
Mrs HAZEL GUELDNER (secretary, Scottish Borders branch) writes: Helen Clark was born on February 20, 1898, in Edinburgh, the eldest of four children, and, after leaving Lasswade high school, she embarked on a career as a pharmacist. She was one of only three women at the Duncan school of pharmacy (the others were Annie Spears and Margaret Robertson). After registering in 1920 she worked with Henry Dryerre at Bonnyrigg.
Helen married Frank Still, a bank manager, but was widowed after a short time. She continued her pharmacy career and, in 1949, married William Clark who farmed at Gortonlee. The couple, having no family, retired to Innerleithen in 1966 at which time she stopped working. After William's death, Helen remained in Innerleithen where she had many good friend and neighbours as well as some of her nephews and their families nearby.
She remained independent for a long time, even doing all her own housework on her 100th birthday in 1998 before all the visitors arrived with their good wishes. She was always optimistic and liked to keep in touch with branch activities. Most years she wrote or telephoned to pass on her apologies for not attending any of the functions, preferring, in her words, to "leave it to the younger members" as she did not like being out too late at night.
Helen appeared in the local newspaper after she had a cataract operation at the age of 101. This gave her renewed vision which she relished with joy, especially when she could see her newest great nephew. Unfortunately, she became ill in November and was in hospital for a few weeks. She was due to be discharged home on the day she died but she slipped away peacefully, less than three months short of her 102nd birthday and five months short of being on the register for 80 years.
Our sympathies are sent to her niece Gladys in Canada and her nephews Jack and Michael Clark and Michael Wilson and their families.

They moved to Surrey when they married 43 years ago, and to Great Bookham in the early 1960s. She Hardisty worked initially in community pharmacy before a career break to have and care for her children, Susan and Mark. She went back to work as a pharmacist at Epsom hospital, where she became active in the Pharmaceutical Society's Epsom branch and served as chairman. Later she moved to the Ministry of Agriculture, where she was engaged in the monitoring of new animal medicines.
Her hobbies included playing and watching sport. She played bowls for Surrey and was due to become president of the Surrey Women's County Bowling Association before becoming unwell.
She is survived by her husband and children and two grandchildren, Sammy and Rebecca.
Funeral: January 31, 10.30am, Randalls Park Crematorium, Randalls Road, Leatherhead. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to the Princess Alice Hospice, West End Lane, Esher, Surrey KT10 8NA.
Harley In a tribute to the late William Leonard Harley (PJ, January 15, p92), Mr MERVYN MADGE writes: May I pay a little tribute to W. L. Harley, whom I had known for many years. He was a man who was proud of his profession and of the city in which he resided, Plymouth. Never taking any position in the Society's local branch, he had a shrewd wisdom and knowledge which were valued.
A product of the former Plymouth school of pharmacy, he became a branch manager of the Co-operative Society pharmacy department and maintained a high professional standard at the pharmacy, serving that area, which was appreciated by so many.
We salute the passing of a man of high character and a respected pharmacist.

Morgan On December 30, 1999, David Anthony Morgan, MRPharmS, of 6 Kings Road, Orpington, Kent BR6 9LH. Mr Morgan registered in 1977.
Mr GEOFF GARFIELD writes: Tony Morgan graduated from Portsmouth in July, 1976, and then returned to his Welsh roots, of which he was always so proud, to complete his preregistration year in Boots the Chemists, Neath. After qualifying, he moved to the Brighton area and, over the next 22 years, undertook a large number of pharmacist and management posts in Boots stores in Sussex, Kent and south London.
Tony was well respected by staff and customers alike as a gentle and caring pharmacist, with a wry, self-deprecating sense of humour. He was a very private man, and those who gained his trust were rewarded with an astute and loyal friend.
Our thoughts and sympathies are now very much with Chris Morgan, who cared for Tony so tirelessly during his long final illness, and with Ceri, their cherished daughter.
