Community pharmacy

Knowing the answer

From Mr I. V. D. Morland, MRPharmS

SIR,—Catching up on my reading, I cannot help commenting on Graham Phillips's letter entitled "Service with a smile" (PJ, January 15, p95). Mr Phillips's actions and those of Unichem are to be commended and no doubt are in the traditions of both Christmas and of pharmacy, but I wonder how many modern-day, caring community pharmacists would have acted likewise?
For that distraught mother (and child) to have been running around all day until 6.30pm can mean only one of two things. First, that Unichem was the only mainline wholesaler with stock and Mr Phillips was their only customer or, secondly, that the other caring community pharmacists in the area could not care less.
For the latter to be untrue, how many pharmacists unglued themselves from their cash registers on that busiest day of the year and picked up the telephone?
Mr Phillips knows the answers to both questions.
