Community pharmacy

More bargaining power

From Mr P. Walton, MRPharmS

SIR,—When Glaxo, with its limited over-the-counter range, introduced its intensely disliked direct invoicing scheme, most smaller community pharmacists could do absolutely nothing to register their view of the system. Larger accounts managed to negotiate favourable terms for themselves.
Now Glaxo Wellcome is to merge with Smithkline Beecham, a very much larger supplier of over-the-counter products. All of a sudden the combined buying power of all the independent pharmacies not constrained by the prescription only status of the product range has become significant.
I am very much looking forward to rearranging my selling space and recommendations given, come the next influenza season.
