The cabinet of the National Assembly for Wales has launched a 10-year plan - "A better Wales" - with targets for improving life in the principality. The plan is open for public consultation before it is debated by the assembly in March.
When the proposal was announced, the then Welsh First Secretary (Mr Alun Michael) said: " 'A Better Wales' provides an ambitious vision for the future of Wales with a clear view of what success would look like by the end of the year 2010."
Success, he said, would be marked by new and improved services and a new direction for Wales (ranging from a concerted drive for higher economic growth and creating a workforce with modern skills).
The strategy to improve life in Wales is built around five areas: opportunities for learning; a stronger economy; better health and well-being; quality of life; and better, simpler government.
The document sets over 100 targets for achievement by the end of the current assembly and actions to achieve them. Among these targets are cuts in the death rate for breast cancer and in the rate at which invasive cervical cancer occurs and better management of hospital waiting times. Other targets cover school class sizes and Welsh tourism.
