From Mr R. J. Witthoft, MRPharmS
SIR,—I would like to congratulate Ellen Williams (PJ, January 22, p157) on her interesting article on serving with a commision with the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC). I qualified in 1960 just as National Service was drawing to a close and decided to apply for commision training in the Royal Army Service Corps (RASC), now the Army Service Corps, rather than be called up into the RAMC as a sergeant dispenser - not a commisioned rank for pharmacists in those days.
I cannot fail to confirm how much training for a commisioned rank helped me to mature as a responsible adult, after having been a student for some years after leaving school.
Now that a commision is automatic, working as a junior officer is a wonderful start to professional life and I would recommend it to any young recently qualified person as a challenging career initiation.
