Abbott Laboratories has applied for European licensing of an apomorphine hydrochloride sublingual tablet for use in the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
The licence application seeks approval for apomorphine in the form of 2mg, 3mg or 4mg tablets that are dissolved under the tongue prior to intercourse. Abbott says that the drug, a dopamine receptor agonist, acts centrally to activate an erection.
The company says that in phase III trials, the most common adverse effect reported was nausea.
