Dr Philip Williams, MRPharmS, a lecturer at the school of pharmaceutical sciences, University of Nottingham, has been awarded a five-year advanced fellowship by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.
Dr Williams told The Journal on March 15 that the fellowship would allow him to continue his research on molecular interactions: "It will allow me to undertake research on interactions between molecules through a combination of experiments, developing new techniques and computer simulations.
"I am looking at how molecules come together and stay together and how this affects mechanical properties such as rigidity and mechanical strength in biological structures. This will help in working out why biological structures, such as cells and bones, fail and why they are designed to fail at certain points."
Dr Williams added that the funding would cover his salary and research expenses and took effect from October 1. He hoped that it would also allow him to establish links with other researchers in Canada and Germany who were working in the same area.
