The independent inquiry into issues arising from the Dr Shipman murder case is to make recommendations on systems for monitoring prescribing, especially for Controlled Drugs.
One of the issues to be considered is how Dr Shipman was able to prescribe and obtain the drugs he used without anyone becoming suspicious. The inquiry is also to consider the role of the General Medical Council in tackling unacceptable medical practice.
In a press notice issued on March 10, Lord Laming (the inquiry chairman) said: "We will consider the balance which has to be struck between self-regulation of the profession and the confidence which the public must have that the first and paramount responsibility of the proper protection of the public."
