Professor Bob Davis to receive Harrison memorial medal

Bob Davis Professor S. S. (Bob) Davis (Lord Trent professor of pharmacy, University of Nottingham) has been named as the winner of the Harrison memorial medal for 2000. He will give his award lecture on September 13 during the British Pharmaceutical Conference in Birmingham.
The Harrison memorial medal is awarded by the Council of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, normally biennially. The medal is purchased from a fund raised in memory of the late Colonel E. F. Harrison, a distinguished pharmaceutical chemist who was appointed the government's director of chemical warfare in 1918.
Professor Davis graduated from the School of Pharmacy, University of London, in 1964 and, after obtaining a PhD, was appointed assistant lecturer and then lecturer in pharmaceutics at the school. In 1970 he moved to Aston university as senior lecturer and head of pharmaceutics. He took up his current post at Nottingham in 1975. He received a DSc degree in 1982.
Professor Davis's main research interest has been novel drug delivery systems, which will provide the subject for his award lecture. His presentation will give examples of drug delivery and drug targeting concepts developed by his research team for anticancer agents, peptide drugs and DNA. The lecture will trace the key stages from formulation through in vitro and in vivo evaluation to eventual clinical trial.

International Conference Centre
The conference venue is the International Convention Centre, located in the centre of Birmingham's leisure quarter, which is set around the city's renovated canal network. Running through the centre of the building is a mall which links the halls and which houses visitor services

Applications for the science medal are invited from scientists world-wide who are under 35 years of age on March 31, 2000, working in a pharmaceutical or allied discipline. The practice research award is open to researchers world-wide who are working in pharmacy practice research or a related discipline in any branch of the profession.
Applications for the science medal should be made to Dr John Clements, BPC Science Secretariat, Room 403, 1 Lambeth High Street, London SE1 7JN (tel 020 7735 9141; e-mail bpcscience@rpsgb.org.uk).
