Hughes On March 5, Eileen Beatrice Elizabeth Hughes (née Fenwick), MRPharmS, of "Inverness", 51 Croham Manor Road, South Croydon, Surrey CR2 7BJ. Mrs Hughes registered in 1937.
Mr G. C. B. SMALLWOOD (secretary of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society's Croydon branch) writes: Eileen Hughes played a long and distinguished part in the Croydon branch, and was instrumental in introducing me to branch administration. I have always been grateful for her tuition and guidance in this extramural activity.
She joined the committee in 1967, becoming vice-chairman in 1973 and chairman in 1974. In 1981, she brought her wealth of knowledge and experience to the position of public relations officer, and it was in this capacity that Eileen put on an exhibition entitled "Mystic mixtures to modern medicines" in Sutton public library to great effect in 1982. She remained in office until her retirement from the committee in 1988.
Eileen spent her career in both the community and hospital spheres.
Our sympathy goes to her husband Charles and family, Christine and Neil.

Jones In a tribute to the late Catherine Lysbeth Jones (PJ, March 4, p365), Mr COLIN RANSHAW (chairman of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society's Welsh Executive) writes: I first met Catherine Jones in 1988 when, as a preregistration trainee, she came to the All Wales Quality Control and Assurance Unit at St Mary's hospital just outside of Cardiff. Catherine enjoyed her experience in quality control, and during her brief stay at St Mary's there was much amusement and confusion because I had three Miss Joneses in the unit at the same time.
Shortly after qualifying she took up an appointment as district quality control pharmacist for the then Gwynedd health authority. During her time in this post we had a lot of contact with each other. Catherine then left this post to take up a hospital appointment in Jersey but soon returned to the South Wales area to work in community pharmacy.
Catherine took the values of "quality" into community with her and was well liked by patients and staff in the various pharmacies she worked at. Indeed she helped some along the way to study further for technicians' and dispensing assistants' courses and was well respected for the way she put over the subject matter.
Catherine had a wonderful bubbly personality that was appreciated by all who encountered her, but above all she was a dedicated professional.
I have many fond memories of Catherine over the years, but above all my most lasting one sums up Catherine. She had just taken over the management of an independent pharmacy in Cardiff that stayed open until 8pm and was desperate for a locum one evening so that she could leave early to get ready and take her newly acquired staff out to a Christmas dinner party. Naturally I succumbed to her charms.
During her illness, Catherine was always very positive and did not show to her friends the turmoil that she must really have been in.
Catherine will be and is missed by all those whose lives she touched, but she will never be forgotten. My thought and prayers at this time are with her husband Jeff, her mother and father and all her family and friends who loved her so dearly.
Mr ERIC BROCKIS (former chief administrative pharmaceutical officer, Gwynedd) writes: It was with great sorrow that I learnt of the untimely death of Catherine L. Jones at the early age of 35. She was a pleasant, vivacious person, good at sport and an active member of her local community, doing a lot of charity work.
I appointed her as a preregistration trainee in 1987, after which she was a basic grade pharmacist and later staff pharmacist (quality control) at Ysbyty Gwynedd, Bangor. She was a conscientious worker and a valuable member of my team. She will be greatly missed by all who were privileged to know her.

Knibb On February 22, Richard John Knibb, MRPharmS, of "Norwood", Wingate Road, Trimdon Station, Co Durham TS29 6AX. Mr Knibb registered in 1954.
Mr G. R. PURDY writes: Richard Knibb was born in Leamington Spa but settled in the Hartlepool area in 1937. After serving in the Royal Air Force towards the end of the war and afterwards in the army, Richard qualified as a pharmacist after studying at Sunderland.
After serving his "apprenticeship" at J. Potts at Hartlepool, Richard joined Wylam Chemists, and he opened his first community pharmacy in the new town of Peterlee, Co Durham, in 1955. Richard was a workaholic and was the driving force behind Wylam Chemists, from which he retired as managing director in 1989 after serving the community for 34 years.
Richard was a shy person who shunned the limelight, but he was very proud to be a community pharmacist. He was always keen to keep up to date and was a founder member of the College of Pharmacy Practice.
He was a past chairman of the Durham branch of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society and served for many years on the local pharmaceutical committee and the Durham family practitioner committee.
He was a past president of the Easington and Peterlee Rotary club, which was another avenue through which he served his local community. Richard personified the Rotary motto of "Service above self".
Richard was part of a devoted family whose generosity and hospitality were enjoyed by all who knew them. He is survived by his wife Eva and children Wendy, Anne and Peter, who will miss him dearly.
May I pay tribute to a most generous and well-respected pharmacist, colleague and family friend.

Painter On February 8, Stanley Thomas Painter, MRPharmS, of 47 Reading House, Hallfield Estate, London W2 6HE. Mr Painter registered in 1936.

Paterson On February 20, Denis Edward Clive Paterson, MRPharmS, aged 93 years, of 22 The Covert, Clayton, Newcastle under Lyme, Staffordshire ST5 4DA. Mr Paterson registered in 1928. With his late wife Eve, Mr Paterson owned and ran the pharmacy in the village of Audlem, Cheshire, from 1937 until 1958, when they moved to the Potteries and he worked for the companies Motts and Sants.
Mr Paterson had completed over 72 years of membership of the Society. He and his late sister Miss K. E. Paterson, who registered in 1929, and his late father Mr A. G. C. Paterson, who qualified in 1901, had over 190 years of membership of the Society between them.

Ruff On December 7, 1999, John Francis Ruff, MRPharmS, of "The Coach House", Syerston Park Hall, Syerston, Newark, Nottinghamshire. Mr Ruff registered in 1948.

Shah In a tribute to the late Sureshchandra Raichand Hansraj Shah (PJ, February 26, p326), Mrs PRISCILLA CHATFIELD writes: It was a shock to read of Suresh Shah's untimely death. Former students from his year at Bristol college of science and technology, with whom I have been in contact, remember him with affection. He was always so cheerful and had an excellent sense of humour.
I visited his business in Southall a few years ago. He was devoted to pharmacy. He was a true community pharmacist.
