Engerix B new schedule

An additional schedule for Smithkline Beecham's Engerix B (hepatitis B) vaccine has been introduced. For rapid induction of protection in adults over 18 years of age, the vaccine can be administered in three doses given at zero, seven and 21 days, followed by a booster at 12 months. This new schedule means that adults who are travelling to areas of high endemicity, and present for vaccination within one month prior to departure, can receive a good level of protection before they travel, says the company. Smithkline Beecham also says that the accelerated schedule, given in conjunction with hepatitis B immunoglobulin, will further benefit people who have been exposed to the virus through accidents (eg, needle stick injuries) or as a result of unprotected sex.
