Slap in the face for independent pharmacists

From Mr R. L. Steinberg, MRPharmS

SIR,-For years Stiefel Laboratories has had the loyal support of independent pharmacies with regard to its over-the-counter and prescription products Oilatum emollient and Polytar liquid, among others.
Why, then, does Stiefel launch a brand new product Oilatum scalp treatment shampoo and advertise it (rather grandly) in newspapers as "available without prescription from Boots"?
This advertisement is a total slap in the face for independent community pharmacy. I urge all independent pharmacies to think twice before promoting Stiefel products and to de-list them from stock wherever possible. There are plenty of other good products in this sector.

Ralph Steinberg
Glasgow

Mr MICHAEL HUGHES (marketing director, Stiefel Laboratories [UK] Ltd) replies: Stiefel Laboratories has enjoyed a mutually beneficial relationship with independent pharmacies for many years. We have a long track record of supporting pharmacies with educational materials, advice on shelf plan management and patient leaflets.
Oilatum scalp treatment shampoo is a new product being test-marketed for a limited period in a number of Boots stores. We will widen distribution to all pharmacies later in the year. The lessons learnt from this short test will benefit all pharmacies.
