The number of deaths related to dothiepin rose in England and Wales from 198 in 1993 to 253 in 1997, according to figures released by the Office for National Statistics (our Lobby correspondent writes).
The biggest increase was in the category of suicide and undetermined death, where the figure rose from 155 to 216 a year over the same period. There was a small fall, from 40 to 37, in accidental deaths where the medicine was mentioned. Deaths where other antidepressants were mentioned rose from 256 in 1993 to 279 in 1997.
