Annual report addendum
The following text is an addendum to p17 of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society's annual report for 1999. The report was circulated as a supplement to last week's issue of The Pharmaceutical Journal.
Pharmaceutical Group of the European Union
- The work of the Pharmaceutical Group of the European Union (PGEU), which represents community pharmacists in the EU members states, was dominated by the impact of the internet. A leaflet was issued jointly with the Standing Committee of Doctors (CP) aimed at advising the public on the risks of ordering medicines over the internet.
- A position statement was drawn up on the draft directive on e-commerce in the pharmaceutical sector and the UK delegation met representatives of the British Medical Association and CP. The PGEU lobbied to influence the progress of the directive in Brussels and the UK delegation contacted members of the European Parliament and met Department of Trade and Industry representatives.
- A symposium in June explored health care trends in Europe and the developing role of the pharmacist. Recognising the importance of the pharmacist's role in pharmacovigilance, a survey was conducted of current practices throughout the EU.
- A position paper was drawn up on the role of the pharmacist in the delivery of veterinary medicines for discussion with the European Medicines Evaluation Agency.
