Roberts On April 13, Thelma Roberts, of 2 Palliser Road, London W14 9EF, aged 63 years. Miss Roberts worked for the Royal Pharmaceutical Society for nearly 40 years, first in the Law Department (now the Professional Standards Directorate) and then in the former Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
Mrs ANNE PRASAD (former executive editor, British National Formulary) writes: The daughter of a Welsh father and a Scottish mother, Thelma Roberts grew up in Wales. Although she lived her entire adult life in London, she never lost contact with her roots in Wales and in Scotland. She also loved to visit relatives in Australia.
Thelma Roberts first joined the Society in 1957. Apart from a brief spell with the British Medical Association in 1967, she remained at the Society's headquarters until her retirement in 1996. Her entire career was thus spent in the service of pharmacy.
Thelma Roberts was associated with the Law Department for most of her long career at the Society. In particular, she was secretary to the head of the Law Department during the tenure of the late Joe Dale. Shortly after the move to Lambeth she transferred to the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, where she was secretary to the general editor during the tenure of Ainley Wade. Throughout that time she also provided considerable secretarial assistance to the British National Formulary editorial team; her services were warmly acknowledged in many editions of the BNF.
Thelma loved sport, and many colleagues will remember playing badminton and tennis with her. It was well known that Wimbledon was the highlight of her year. She also loved travel and took special pleasure in her visits to pharmacist friends in the United States.
Sadly, after only a short period of retirement, she developed the prolonged and devastating illness that was to end her life. She bore her suffering with immense fortitude and visitors never failed to be moved by her courtesy towards them.
Tribute must be paid to the nursing staff for their skilled and loving care throughout her long stay at Charing Cross hospital. Friends will be glad to know that during the final weeks of her illness she obtained some measure of peace. It often comforted her to hear tales of old days and happy times with the Society.
Thelma Roberts was devoted to pharmacy and to pharmacists. She formed many lasting friendships with pharmacists throughout her years with the Society and will be sadly missed by many of its past and present employees.
