Mrs HAZEL GUELDNER (secretary of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society's Scottish Borders branch) writes: Arthur Smith was born in Selkirk, the only son of Thomas Smith who was then owner of the established pharmacy of A. J. Borthwick. During local schooling Arthur became fascinated with natural history, encouraged by his teachers. He was also involved in the early days of the Boy Scouts in the town. On deciding to train as a pharmacist, he chose to study at Bristol, though later admitting that his choice was not for the course content but because there happened to be rare swallow-tailed butterflies in the vicinity which he could readily go and see.
Arthur remained in Bristol for a time before returning to Selkirk to join his father's business, eventually taking it over and running it himself until his retirement. He married Greta Burrell of Selkirk, and they had three children.
Arthur was a member of many clubs in the area, including the Scottish Wildlife Trust (of which he was a founding member of the Tweed Valley branch in 1964), the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (of which he became a council member), the St Kilda Club and the Scottish Ornithologists Club. He also revelled in plants, finding an orchid thought to be extinct and also plants dating from the ice age near Loch Skene. He wrote nature notes in the Southern Reporter local paper for many years. Arthur was a founding member of the Selkirk camera club, in which he held a number of offices. He eventually became its honorary president and a life member.
Many people held Arthur in high regard and he would receive inquiries from all over the country regarding the identification of plants or wildlife. He was regarded by many as one of the best sources of knowledge of natural history in the country.
He was also heavily involved in saving rare species. He often helped out with trying to save a disappearing habitat in order to preserve the existence of various species. Even with advancing years he was not afraid to lend a helping hand where needed.
He kept active until his recent admission to a nursing home, even sending his apologies some three weeks ago for not being able to attend the forthcoming branch annual general meeting.
Our sympathies are extended to his family - Dale, Linda and David - and their families.
