A vaccine for use as a treatment of hypertension has shown positive results in a phase 1 study, says Protherics Ltd. The company's angiotensin vaccine was shown to produce an antibody response and the company says that there were "encouraging indications" that the antibodies were able to block the blood pressure raising effects of angiotensin. Phase 2 studies are now planned.
According to Protherics, the aim is to "demonstrate the ability of the vaccine to control blood pressure as effectively as current leading oral drugs that act on the angiotensin system".
