New teaching and research facilities for pharmacy and pharmacology, which cost over £3.5m, were officially opened at Bath university on May 5 by Professor Trevor Jones (director general, Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry). On the same occasion, Professor Jones was awarded an honorary DSc by the university in recognition of his contribution to innovation in the pharmaceutical sciences.
The new pharmacy development is part of a wider development of over 2,000 sq m of teaching and research space for the university's departments of pharmacy and pharmacology and of postgraduate medicine. Two teaching laboratories - one specialising in chemistry and the other in biology - provide high-tech facilities capable of accommodating 70 students. An area dedicated to clinical pharmacy and pharmacy practice contains a learning centre equipped to simulate real-life pharmacy practice conditions. A computer network is linked to 15 telematic cameras within the university's licensed commercial aseptic services unit to facilitate both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in aseptic preparation.
