Brunning In a tribute to the late Charles Henry Brumming (PJ, May 6, p691), Mr ARTHUR NEWEY writes: Many people will be saddened by Charles Brunning's death. Pharmacy has lost one of its more colourful characters. We were both Boots apprentices and we met 60 years ago when we enrolled for the part 1 course at Liverpool technical college in 1940. The intake at that time was, I think, six students. From there we went on to Humphrey Jones's school of pharmacy in Liverpool, the last of the private colleges offering pharmacy courses. Subsequently, while many of us went into the uniformed services, Charles had health troubles which prevented him getting into a combat unit. Eventually he was called up to be a Bevin Boy, when he worked in Gresford colliery in north Wales. This was extremely courageous of him, as he could have been discharged on health grounds, and he served the full two years underground.
After the war, he worked in Kenya and Uganda, and later in the British Cameroons. He spent some time in pharmaceutical development at Boots in Beeston, where I was working. Later he married Onwen and acquired a business in Caergwrle, north Wales. There he made many own-name toiletries, etc, in a small manufacturing unit behind the shop. He was elected a fellow of the Society in 1972. He retired to Shropshire, where he delighted in a large garden comprising an orchard and two greenhouses. As time went on, he became restricted in movement but he always had a great sense of humour, even towards the end when he bore his troubles with great fortitude.
He will be greatly missed by all who knew him and especially by his wife Onwen and two daughters Jane and Jill.

Hackney In a tribute to the late Reginald Arthur Hackney (PJ, May 13, p723), Mr STEPHEN CHAPPELL writes: I met Reg Hackney in 1970 when I moved to take up an appointment at Eastbourne hospitals. Reg had already completed a career as a community pharmacist in the Potteries, when he retired to the south coast and found an opportunity to help as a locum in the hospital pharmacy service. Always amiable, caring and competent, he continued to assist in the hospital service, when needed, for several years. Later, he and his wife, who predeceased him, moved to be nearer their family in the Isle of Wight.
To have known Reg Hackney was a pleasure and a privilege. We, his Eastbourne colleagues, salute his memory with affection.
