John M Harris Trust

Work complete

From Dr W. Dawson, MRPharmS

SIR,-Many pharmacists contributed to the fund set up in memory of John Harris who died in 1988 while on the staff at the school of pharmacy in Brighton. His work at Brighton established the clinical pharmacy unit within the school, which led the way in integrating the teaching of pharmacy with the practice of the profession. His initiatives in clinical pharmacy were widely appreciated and have been extended immeasurably in the United Kingdom over the past decade. He would have been delighted to see this transformation in the pharmacy world.
During the 10 years of the trust's existence, it has awarded 21 research and travel awards in the fields of pharmacological and practice research. The awards have helped young scientists, many of them pharmacists, to develop their careers and this would have met with John's approval given his strong mentoring skills and his research base.
The trustees feel that they have discharged their responsibilities and have ensured that the fund was totally allocated to its aims of educational support in the fields of pharmacology and practice. The funds have been used up and the trust's work is complete. We are grateful to the College of Pharmacy Practice and its research panel for their help in the administration of the awards.
I will be happy to provide further details of the awards to any interested parties.
