Pharmacies in Wales to benefit from seized drug money

A dozen pharmacies in central and West Wales are to benefit from £54,000 confiscated from convicted drug dealers.
Mr Peter Mason (substance misuse co-ordinator, Dyfed Powys drug and alcohol action team) told The Journal on May 26 that the money, allocated from the Confiscated Assets Fund, would be used to offer the pharmacies financial assistance for creating private areas where drug users on methadone replacement therapy or using needle exchange schemes could be seen.
"It is about taking services to people, rather than expecting them to travel to services," Mr Mason said.
He added that within the next two months he expected to invite pharmacies to contact him to bid for the money and to explain what ideas they had about how it could be used.
The funding was announced on May 25 by the Welsh National Assembly secretary for health and social services (Ms Jane Hutt) at a drug abuse conference in Cardiff. She also announced the launch of a new substance misuse strategy for Wales.
The new strategy is more wide ranging than those for England and Scotland, as it covers the misuse of alcohol, prescribed medicines and medicines sold over the counter, as well as illicit drugs.
