Ten pharmacists designated as fellows

Ten pharmacists have been designated as fellows of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society by the panel of fellows. They are Ms Judith Cantrill, Professor Stephen Denyer, Mr David Hands, Mr Stephen Harris, Dr Andrew Hersom, Mrs Sheila Kelly, Mr David Reid, Mr Colin Ranshaw, Professor John Shaw and Mr Ben Zatland. The following biographical information has been provided by the panel of fellows to assist in identifying the pharmacists concerned. It does not necessarily represent the reasons for designation as fellows.

Miss Judith Cantrill, who registered in 1978, has since 1994 been joint clinical senior lecturer at the school of pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences and the National Primary Care Research and Development Centre at the University of Manchester. She has also been honorary principal pharmacist (clinical services) at South Manchester University Hospitals NHS trust since 1992 and course director for the diploma in clinical and health service pharmacy since 1996. From 1990 to 1992, she was deputy director of pharmacy at Hope hospital.

Professor Stephen Denyer, who registered in 1979, is head of school and professor of pharmaceutical and applied microbiology at the school of pharmacy and biomedical sciences, University of Brighton. He is a former lecturer in pharmaceutical microbiology in the department of pharmaceutical sciences at Nottingham university. Since 1998, he has chaired the editorial board of the Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology and Pharmacy and Pharmacology Communications.

Mr David Hands, who registered in 1992, has been regional drug information pharmacist in Southampton since 1976. He was previously staff pharmacist (quality control/drug information) at the Royal South Hants hospital (1975-76). He has been a member of the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry's code of practice appeal board since 1996. He has been actively involved in local drug, prescribing, and drug development committees since 1976 and was joint organiser at the National Co-ordinating Centre for Drug and Therapeutics Committees from 1980 to 1985.

Mr Stephen Harris is a hospital pharmacist who registered in 1976. In 1995 he set up his own business, Steve Harris Associates, to become involved in a non-executive director capacity in small start-up businesses in the health care sector and also to act as a consultant in business development and product licensing in the ethical and over-the-counter fields. From 1990-95, he was a main board director at Medeva Plc and was initially responsible for the newly acquired business Evans Healthcare. Subsequently, he was responsible for setting up Medeva's international, licensing, and scientific and regulatory affairs departments.

Dr Andrew Hersom is an industrial pharmacist who registered in 1973. Since 1995 he has been quality development manager for global pharmaceutical research and development at Reckitt & Colman Products and has developed the processes and systems relating to the quality of science, assuring good clinical and good manufacturing practice compliance in research and development laboratories, clinical affairs and production. He has been secretary of the Society's Hull branch since 1991 and chairman of the Society's Yorkshire region for 1999-2000.

Mrs Sheila Kelly, who registered in 1972, has been executive director of the Proprietary Association of Great Britain since 1990. Responsible for promoting the concept of POM-to-P switches, she instigated the setting up of a working group with the Medicines Control Agency and the Society which developed guidelines that led to more than 50 switches. She also promoted co-operation between the PAGB and the National Pharmaceutical Association on display and access to medicines to enhance the commercial and professional roles of the pharmacist. From 1980 to 1985 she was responsible for new drug evaluations, abridged applications and review of medicines in the Department of Health's medicines division. From 1972 to 1977 she worked at Glaxo Laboratories, where she developed the Dermovate and Eumovate range of corticosteroids and was responsible for new product development projects. She is a board member of the European Proprietary Medicine Manufacturers Association.

Mr Colin Ranshaw, who registered in 1976, has since 1985 been principal pharmacist, quality assurance and control, at the Vale of Glamorgan health authority. Previously he was staff pharmacist, quality assurance and control, at the East Dyfed health authority (1980-85). He has been a member of the Society's Welsh Executive since 1993 and chairman since 1998. He is a member and secretary of the quality assurance and control subcommittee of the Welsh Pharmaceutical Committee and is publicity officer for the Guild of Healthcare Pharmacists in South Wales.

Mr David Reid is a community pharmacist who registered in 1967. He chaired his local pharmaceutical committee from 1984 to 1987. He is pharmacy contractor member of the South Essex health authority pharmacy strategy group. He is lead member of the pharmacy strategy subcommittee, considering mechanisms to overcome pharmacy workforce problems in South Essex. He is also a board member of Southend primary care group and is involved in the management of the South Essex preregistration training scheme.

Professor John Shaw, who registered in 1974, has held the chair in pharmacy at the University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand, since 1990 and has been associate dean (academic) in the school of pharmacy since 1995. Previously, he was senior clinical pharmacist, Otago area health board (1990-91). He has been a visiting lecturer at Aston university (1983-84) and Fiji school of medicine (1997). He has provided an occasional commentary on prescribing rights on Radio New Zealand since 1994.

Mr Ben Zatland, who registered in 1958, owns and runs two community pharmacies, one based in a health centre. He has been a pharmaceutical (clinical) assessor since 1996. He was a member of the appeal unit/family health services appeal authority of the National Appeals Panel from 1987 to 1997. He was chairman of National Pharmaceutical Association business services from 1998 to 1999 and chairman of the NPA's practice committee from 1999 to 2000.
