Dr JAMES CHILTON writes: Jimmy Stewart (as he was always known) was one of the best known, respected and liked pharmacists of his generation in Scotland. He combined the operation of a busy pharmacy in Glasgow's East End with an unequalled record of service to his profession.
Our paths first converged when he was elected in the mid-1960s as social secretary to the Glasgow and West of Scotland branch of the Society, of which I was then the secretary. This involved the organisation of an annual dinner dance for the largest branch in Britain. Jimmy's social skills and organising ability ensured the continuing success of this function. Later, he proceeded to election as vice-chairman and chairman of the branch.
A major challenge came with the 1971 Glasgow meeting of the British Pharmaceutical Conference, the first to be organised by the Society. The local committee included a galaxy of West of Scotland pharmacists with Jimmy as transport convener. This meant, among other things, the bussing of the entire conference membership from Strathclyde university to a lunch venue half way along Sauchiehall Street and back in time for the afternoon sessions. We were never late.
Another major challenge was the conference excursion which, in those relaxed times, occupied almost an entire day and, in Glasgow, inevitably meant a steamer trip "doon the watter" to Rothesay. All went well and our police-escorted convoy of buses made conference history.
Jimmy was elected chairman of the the Society's Scottish Executive in 1972, very soon after my own appointment as the Society's resident secretary in Scotland. It was my exceedingly good fortune to start with a chairman whom I had known and liked for so many years and who appreciated that we were learning together. It was an exciting period as the NHS (Scotland) Act preceded the corresponding legislation for England and Wales and we were very much on our own. The Act and subsequent Regulations set a distinctive pattern for the Health Service in Scotland which was to endure successfully for 20 years.
Jimmy Stewart's unvarying good humour and imperturbability were legendary and his watchword was always "Nae problem".
Pharmacy in Scotland will mourn his passing, and our special sympathy goes to his wife Janet and family.
