Emergency contraception

Anachronistic assertion

From Mr G. Diamond, MRPharmS

SIR,-Mr Clarke's assertion (PJ, June 10, p882) that the motion approved by the branch representatives' meeting in relation to emergency contraception will cause increased promiscuity and lowered moral standards is anachronistic.
Curtailing unwanted pregnancies via emergency hormonal contraception from a community pharmacy is a laudable service. Our concern should be the needs of our patients, and our remit should not involve any moral posturing based on religous dogma or brainwashing.
People make their own choices concerning their own attitudes, beliefs and values. If they choose promiscuity then let them enjoy it or take whatever consequences for it. All we can do as pharmacists is provide good health education along with services with other health and social care professions and, in so doing, give patients the support and choice they deserve.
