Mr Richard Dean, MRPharmS, has been reappointed as a non-executive director of South Staffordshire health authority until March, 2004. Mr Dean is chairman of the authority's audit committee. He is also a member of the board of East Staffordshire primary care group, where he chairs the prescribing subcommittee, and chairman of South Staffordshire local pharmaceutical committee. Mr Dean is managing director of Dean & Smedley Ltd, a community pharmacy company in Burton-on-Trent.
Mrs Eleanor Hards, MRPharmS, has been appointed vice-chairman of South Oxfordshire district council. Mrs Hards has been a member of the council for the past seven years while working as a locum. She is a past mayor of Didcot.
Mrs Sheila Kelly, FRPharmS, Dr Michael Jepson, FRPharmS, and Professor David Luscombe, FRPharmS, have been awarded honorary membership of the British Institute of Regulatory Affairs in recognition of services performed for the institute.
Dr David Burt, FRPharmS, has been awarded a doctor of philosophy degree by the University of Wales. Dr Burt's thesis was entitled "An examination of the pharmaceutical responses to the implementation of the chemists and druggists register: the transformation of a trade into a profession". The work was supervised by Dr David Allsobrook from the Cardiff school of social sciences and Professor P. S. J. Spencer, formerly head of the Welsh school of pharmacy.
