First approval for triple HIV drug

The European Union's Committee for Proprietary Medicinal Products has recommended approval of Trizivir, Glaxo Wellcome's new triple combination therapy for treatment of HIV infection, the company announced on July 18.
Trizivir contains three antiretroviral drugs in one tablet: abacavir sulphate 300mg, lamivudine 150mg and zidovudine 300mg. The product has a dose of one tablet twice daily.
The three components will continue to be available individually.
The CPMP's opinion will now be considered by the European Commission for a final decision on licensing.
