Targeting influenza

The Department of Health has sent a letter to health authorities, primary care groups and NHS trusts reminding them that targets have been set for influenza immunisation over the forthcoming season.
The letter, which was sent on August 1, says that a minimum of 60 per cent of patients aged 65 years and over should be immunised against influenza. The reduction in the minimum age for immunisation from 75 years and over was announced in the Chief Medical Officer's update bulletin (see PJ, May 27, p793).
A national publicity programme to highlight the need for vaccination to the general public will be launched on September 18. Since demand is expected to be high, early ordering is advisable.
